Faithful in Little Things

There is a children’s song that has been stuck in my head recently.  Part of the chorus says, “Faithful in little things, ‘cause little things make big things…”  I think it is by Patch the Pirate.  I know the song is trying to teach our children to be faithful in the small things, but recently I have been noticing how my God is faithful – right down to the little things.

Now that the twins have arrived and I look back to see how all of the details came into play, I am overwhelmed with the faithfulness of the Lord.  His faithfulness in the details is indeed a big thing!

While I was starting to fret about having a van on time, God was busy giving us a van that was close and easy to pick up, low miles, and at a lower price that most of what we had shopped.  And then our church and Ben’s home church surprised us by taking up a special offering for our van.  This unexpected blessing, added to our savings for the van, meant that we didn’t have to finance any of it.

By 35 weeks I was really ready to have the babies.  But I also needed to play the piano for our revival meetings on the last night because our pastor’s wife was at a ladies retreat.  I made it through that week!  I didn’t really want to be induced, but I really wanted to have the babies!  At my 37 week appointment they said they would induce me at 38 weeks.  My water broke the next morning, so that I didn’t have to finish the week or be induced.

Ben kept saying that I was going to have the baby on a Tuesday, so that he would just take off the rest of the week from work.  That’s exactly how it worked out.  We called Grandma and she was able to leave right away to come watch Elaine & Nolan.  A friend from church stayed with them until Grandma arrived, minimalizing the amount of shuffling that had to be done for Elaine & Nolan’s care.  They never even had to leave home!

When we got to the hospital we were concerned about parking.  The garage wasn’t open yet, and it is a difficult neighborhood in which to find a spot.  We got a spot two blocks from the hospital that was not in a street cleaning zone!

There was one midwife that I just wasn’t too comfortable with, and I was praying that she would not be on call when I went into labor.  As it turned out, I called the midwife at 4 a.m. to meet me at the hospital (just like I did with Nolan).  It was the same midwife that I got out of bed when I was in labor with Nolan!  And, at 7 a.m. when the midwives change shifts, the same midwife who delivered Nolan came on duty.  It was an answer to prayer!

The twins were full term (even by singleton baby standards) and we didn’t have to send them to the NICU or stay longer at the hospital.  There were no complications with anything.

So far both babies are good eaters, and I have been able to breastfeed them both, just as I wanted to.  They will sleep in the crib for a couple of hours at a time, so I don’t even have to have the pack ‘n’ play in the living room.  My first day home alone was an easy one, and I even got a little cat nap.

Friends have brought us meals, and picked things up at the store for us.  The last two gifts I received came pre-washed.  Why didn’t I ever think to do that for a new mom?  It’s another little thing that I don’t have to worry about.

I was concerned about Nehemiah being jaundiced, as he seems a little yellow.  I had a couple other minor concerns too.  The twins’ doctor appointment went well, and the pediatrician was fine with everything.

And I feel so extra blessed to have a husband who is so helpful.  I know a few dads who won’t even change a diaper.  Ben is bottle feeding, changing diapers, and he can swaddle a baby pretty good!  All of this on half sleep, and still helping with the dishes and taking time for Elaine & Nolan.  It’s a lot to keep up with!

It’s a big thing – bringing home two newborns to the two toddlers you already have at home.  Our life changed overnight, and we’ll be in survival mode for a little while.  I’m so thankful that God is faithful in little things, because little things make things!

  1. You're doing great, Mama!! They are just beautiful. Can't stoop looking at their pictures. :) I wrote a similar post as this right after Charity was born. There were SO many little things we had prayed about and hoped for that God answered, even down to the doctor on call (chance of 1 in 6) and many, many other things. Amazing. That's a great memory to have as a keepsake!

  2. Little Things, Big Things. God cares about every detail of our lives, and His ways are good all the time. Thank you for sharing! LOVE the pictures of the kids--all four of them.
