A City Life For Me

Today everyone is posting about how grateful they are for their fathers. And while I am certainly thankful for my father, and now my “bonus” dad – my father-in-law – today I wanted to talk about a different father. Someone that I could not do without – the father of my kiddos. I don’t talk about Ben very much here on the blog. The kiddos pretty much get the spotlight. But today is Father’s Day, and I didn’t think I could let it slip by without bragging on the awesome dad that my kids have. Especially since I am missing him today, and Father’s Day is incomplete without him. When we were dating, Ben asked me how many children I wanted to have. My reply was, “Eight.” I’m not sure what made that number come out of my mouth…I always hated babysitting and as a teenager was adamant that I didn’t want to have any snotty nosed kids. Maybe I was trying to scare Ben away, or see how serious he was about our relationship. But as it became clear that we were going to get married, we “decided” that...

We don’t do holidays very “big” in our home.  It makes for a lot less pressure when things are already busy or out-of-our-normal-routine…like adding new twins to the family!  For Mother’s Day I got to get a pedicure, but I did it the following weekend when we had time.  For Father’s Day Ben picked a couple of favorite meals, we all took a nap, and we went to the park.  It was relaxing and fun, without being stressful or spending a lot of money. Ben couldn’t decide between BLT’s or hamburgers…two simple meals that we enjoy but don’t eat very frequently.  So we had BLT’s on Saturday and hambugrgers on Sunday.  We also had some Samoa Brownies .  This recipe for homemade caramels makes the brownies easier and less expensive. After the long weekend working at the church, we were pretty exhausted on Father’s Day.  Elaine gave Daddy her card and present before church.  I made French Toast for breakfast.  Showing off her artwork to Daddy. She was so excited to color in his card! We gave Ben a baseball t-shirt. At our church, it is a Father’s Day tradition for the men to wear a Filipino barong.  Ben was excited this year when Chito gave him a barong to wear! I thought it was funny when Faith Jackey (who is 4) walked up to one of the men and said, “Hey – my dad is wearing that shirt today!” My two favorite people all dressed up! After church we came home for a nice long nap.  Seriously…I think we all slept soundly for four hours!  Then we grabbed a McDonalds and headed for Brooklyn Bridge Park.  We arrived around sunset, and the view was spectacular!
