A City Life For Me

I can’t go wordless today, so how about a Wednesday Wow?  For the 2012 Republican nomination, “We Pick Rick!”  Today, my brother Wesley got to meet Rick Santorum at a rally held at The Crown College (where Wes is a student) in Tennessee.  When Rick finished the speech, Wesley got a picture with him!  Ben is going to be jealous when he finds out!

That’s what my dad and Ben’s mom like to call Elaine.  I wasn’t keen on nicknames to begin with, but I find myself calling Elaine “Lainey” more and more.  Are y’all tired of me talking about Elaine?  I know I’m completely biased because I’m the mommy, but I can’t help it!  I must say at least a dozen times a day, “She’s just so cute!”   She really is in a cute stage! Elaine has most recently developed a conscience.  She knows what “no” means, and she knows what she isn’t supposed to play with.  And I think she sometimes “guesses” that a particular item will be off limits too.  All I have to do is say “Elaine” and she bolts.  She drops it and runs (as much as she can run) the other way.  It’s like she’s saying, “Nope.  That wasn’t me.  I wasn’t playing with it.”  It’s the funniest thing to watch – maybe I will catch it on video some day. Lainey loves Cheerios.  She usually ends up spewing them all over the floor....

  Ben loves baseball.  I don’t …I’m learning.  I do hope the Rangers win the World Series.  They are partially owned by Nolan Ryan.  He was also their star pitcher for many years.  According to Ben, Nolan Ryan was one of the greatest pitchers in baseball.  President George W. Bush used to be a co-owner.  This is the Rangers’ first appearance in the World Series.  One of their star players has a great name…Hamilton! Tonight, to open game 4 of the series, President Bush was asked to throw the ceremonial first pitch.  He was accompanied onto the field by his dad, President George H.W. My mom sent me this video.  I have been a little more out of the political loop than normal since we moved to New York City.  I haven’t had a political blog post in a long time.  So…here it is!

I’ve kind of been out of the political loop since we moved to New York City.  This week on the Glenn Beck program, Richard L. Rubenstein from Yale University was spotlighted for sharing his perspective on what is happening in the relationship between President Obama and the nation of Israel.  I agree with what he said, and he said it very well.  Here is a YouTube video so you can listen for yourself.  It is worth your time!

This was a forward from my mom, and it made me chuckle.  Hope it makes you laugh too! Let me get this straight. We're going to pass a health care plan written by a committee whose head says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it but exempts themselves from it, signed by a president that also hasn't read it, and who smokes, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's nearly broke. What possibly could go wrong?

On Saturday , 9/12/09 Ben and I left at 3 a.m. to drive to Washington, D.C. as part of the taxpayer protest on Capitol Hill.  Ben’s mom & brother, Evan, drove down from Massachusetts and we met at the WWII Memorial.  The people were supposed to gather at Freedom Plaza around 9:00 a.m., and the March would commence around 11:30 a.m.  We were three hours early, and the amount of people congregating was phenomenal!  There were signs, flags, and colonial costumes .  We were there to protest big government, out-of-control government spending, congressmen & senators who aren’t listening to the people, and the proposed government takeover of healthcare.  We were also defending the Constitution.  At first I was disappointed that I had not taken the initiative to make a sign.  Then as the crowd became larger and navigation became harder, I was relieved that I didn’t have a sign to deal with. This Saturday, on 9/12/09 there is a national march in Washington, D.C. against big government.  It is referred to as the 9/12 Project, with events all over the country, and it is spearheaded by Glenn Beck.  The goal is to return our country to the spirit on 9/12/01 – the day after the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City.  On that day it was not about Democratic or Republic, red state or blue state, but it was about America .  The 9/12 Project is based upon 9 Principles and 12 Values, outlined at www.912project.com as follows: The 9 Principles 1.  America Is Good. 2.  I believe in God and He is the Center of my Life. I realize that my blog does not reach very many people – just a handful of family and friends.  However, I felt I needed to write a post on the actions you can take to stand up against Obamacare, the proposed government take-over of the healthcare industry.  In this matter, Congress and the current Administration have gone too far.  I attended my local Tea Party against taxes on April 15th.  As a result, I get emails from TeaPartyPatriots.org .  They have made several suggestions regarding actions we can take to let our voice be heard against nationalized healthcare.    I feel that if you aren’t going to take the steps necessary to stand up, to let your voice be heard, and to do what you can do, then you have no rights to complain about what happens.  We can make phone calls, send letters/emails, and let our elected officials know what we want in this matter.  They may listen, and they may not, but they can’t listen unless we are talking. ...

I attended the Virginia Beach Tax Day Tea Party on April 15, 2009.  I enjoyed myself, but it would have been more fun if I would have had a “buddy” to go with me.  The PA system was very poor, and even in the middle of the crowd I could not hear most of the speakers.    Former US Representative Thelma Drake, who was voted out in November, addressed the group.  She shared about the opposition she received when she voted against the T.A.R.P bill and stimulus packages last fall.  It was an excellent speech.   Here are some pictures of some of the signs. Well, as went the nation, so went my state, so went my precinct. As the 3rd largest precinct in Virginia Beach City, we had around 4500 registered voters. 300 voted by absentee ballot. Around 2100 showed up at the polls. There were around 1200 votes for Obama and about 963 votes for McCain. It just wasn't enough. When I arrived at the polling place at approximately 4:58 am, there was already a line of voters from the door down to the curb, waiting in the rain, for the polls to open at 6am. From the time the polls opened until around 10:30 am, the line was 2-3 wide, down to the street (our polling place is the Eastern Shore Chapel, an Episcopalian Church). From 10:30ish until 1:30ish, the flow inside was still heavy and steady, although the line outside was not as long. We had a brief reprieve around 1:30, and then it picked up again until 4:30. Between 4:30 and 5:00, for the first time all day, there was no one in the "H-O" line. After 5:30, things pretty much died, much ...

Today is election day. I am serving as an election official for the City of Virginia Beach. My slumber ended at approximately 4 am, so that I could arrive at the polls at 5 am. In Virginia the polls are open from 6 am - 7 pm. The city has hired 1500 + citizens to man the polls this election. In past years Virginia Beach has only hired around 800 officials for a general election. We are expecting a huge turnout and extremely long lines all day long. The Voter Registrar warned that we may have 200 people in line waiting to vote when the polls close at 7 pm. ***Translation: The polls may close at 7 pm, but I don't expect to leave before 10 pm. That works out to a 17 hour day! If we are done at 10 pm. So go out and vote today. It is only one vote, but that one vote counts. Help save America from socialism, increased taxes , and defeat and surrender in Iraq. I'll be back tomorrow to let you know the results of my day at the polls!

When I was at the laundry mat this week the attendant was watching a TV news report on the 2008 presidential election. When I walked in, he jokingly asked me, “Who are you voting for?” Just as jokingly, yet completely seriously, I replied, “Sarah Palin.” I was choosing to vote for John McCain only as a means to avoid an Obama presidency. Now I am voting for John McCain because his running mate is Sarah Palin.
