The Rest of Florida

I never got a chance to finish blogging about our trip to Florida, because life just got away with me!  Traveling every weekend means catch-up each week.  It’s lots of late nights and early mornings, and I haven’t been able to think clearly enough to get this caught up!  So, here is the rest of Florida in one shot…

:: Friends

I was so excited to get to spend an evening with my best friend Danielle and her family.  And though it doesn’t show much in this picture, Danielle is expecting their first baby – a boy!

My Grams was along on this trip.  She let Elaine and Nolan sleep in her hotel room.  They obviously loved it!

Grams made a special presentation to my Dad while we were all together.  She gave him a picture album with his childhood pictures in it.  It was a project she had wanted to start with my Gramps, but he passed away in 2010 before they got to it.  Since then she has put together four of these albums, dividing the pictures between her four children.  It was a special evening!

That Grandma – she’s a smart one!  She brought along a kite, and we had a lovely windy day.  The kids enoyed the kite, the babies enjoyed the grass, and I enjoyed the sun!

Strawberry Picking

Last week found us in Virginia Beach for a Mission’s Conference at Tabernacle Baptist Church.  This is the church where Ben took some Seminary Hebrew classes in 2008 and 2009.  We didn’t attend Tabernacle for church, so we had a great time making new friends.  We also haven’t been back to Virginia Beach since moving to Brooklyn four years ago, so we enjoyed seeing a couple of “old” friends too!

Virginia Beach has a lot of farmland.  One thing we enjoyed during the 2.5 years we lived there was the strawberries!  I picked my own berries and made jam, and we also attended the annual Strawberry Festival.  On our last morning in Va. Beach, we headed out to Pungo in search of some strawberry fields.  It didn’t take Ben long to remember the roads!  Though the original forecast was for rain, God granted us a beautiful morning to be outside!

I was really excited to pick strawberries this year because it’s been over two years since I did any canning, and also because I had signed up to make some jam for our church’s Ladies Luncheon at the end of this month.

The kids enjoyed it too!  I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story.  This year I had four kids who thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and this is one momma who had a lot of clean up to do afterwards!

Ben had all four kids in tow, showing them which strawberries to pick.  He showed them how to pluck the berries off the stem, too, but I ended up with a lot of mangled strawberries anyway!

Liberty.  She hasn’t touched a strawberry in her life.  I have tried.  She always spits them out at me.  But it didn’t take her long to get excited about picking and eating her own berries.  They become independent at a young age, right?!?!

Nehemiah.  He picked this white berry and ate the whole thing – leaf and all – before anyone could stop him.  Then he discovered the red ones, and he was unstoppable!

Busy twins – eating & picking!

At one point Liberty was down on all fours eating berries off the “bush” with her mouth.

Yup.  We had strawberries in the strawberry blond hair.

Stealing from Noley’s bucket as he walked by…

This is only a glimpse of how red my kids were.  Praise the Lord for OxyClean – I got all the stains out!

I think he would make an adorable country boy…but we’ll stick with the City!

{One Year}

Eeeek!  It’s been a year?!?

Twins 1 Year Old jpg

Yes.  It has.  A whole year with twins.  We’ve had so much fun, and I can’t even  {hardly} remember the rough pregnancy days or the sleepless nights of those first couple of months {well – I remember the first night}.  I finally got a chance to snap a few pictures of my twinsies to celebrate one year.

Though Nehemiah took his first steps a couple of months ago, it wasn’t until April 17th that he really started walking.  It was as if he just stood up and decided to walk everywhere.  Liberty does a hybrid of walking and crawling – one leg up and on one knee.  It is humorous to watch, but she can really move, and transport whatever toy she wants in this manner!

Both of the twins are all.about.food.  Strap them into their seats and they won’t shut up until they have food in their mouths!  Nehemiah is a slow-and-steady-I-eat-anything kind of guy.  Liberty is…picky.  Really picky.  But if it’s a meal she likes (at least on that day, because her preferences changes daily it seems), she is a two-fisted eater.  They can both out-eat their older siblings!  Nehemiah has four top teeth and two bottom teeth.  Liberty has at least two top teeth and two bottom teeth.

Nehemiah delights in making us laugh.  He loves to play peek-a-boo.  He loves to put a towel or shirt or anything fabric over his head and around his neck, then he pops out to laugh and smile at us!  He is a total boy – cars, trucks, balls, and noises all included!

Liberty is a climber and can move up the steps pretty quickly.  (She has also come down some pretty quickly – Mommy isn’t used to being on guard about steps anymore since we don’t have any at our home).  Libs has warmed up to this “deputation thing” and has welcomed several people into “the club” by offering them a smile!  She’s not quite as much of a stoic anymore, though she definitely still has moments!

We lovingly refer to Liberty as our “little vacuum cleaner”.  She scoots around the floor finding all kinds of…tidbits – and taste testing them!  I am often pulling things out of her mouth which don’t belong there!  She also loves anything soft and snuggly, and can normally be found playing by the shoe basket.

These two can self-entertain and have a jolly time all by themselves.  They laugh and share toys, hide, and get into trouble together all the time.  They also fight over toys and pacifiers.  All the time.  Liberty stole a truck from Nehemiah and turned so he couldn’t take it back.  Not to be defeated, Nehemiah crawled on top of Libs and bit her in the back!

In April we went for a vacation with my family in the Florida Keys.  The twins enjoyed their first fish fry and ocean experience.  Actually, Liberty enjoyed the ocean and swimming pool.  Nehemiah hated every bit of sand and water that we tried to give him.

Then beginning on Easter we dropped all four kids off at Ben’s parents for a week of orientation with the mission board.  The twins were not quite a year old, so it was hard for me to leave them, but we all survived!

They got to enjoy cake with both sides of the family, stretching the birthday celebration throughout the whole month.  Liberty loved her cupcake in Florida, and then reached over to help Nehemiah eat his too.  Nehemiah loved his cake in Massachusetts, throwing quite the show!
